Introducing Mosscap
A friendly and boring fork of Ruby on Rails formerly known as Amiko.
Mosscap is (or will be, in time) a Rails fork that does not tolerate nazis, transphobes, racists, or any kind of bigotry (see our Code of Conduct for more). We aim to build a community where people of all backgrounds and experience levels can feel respected, and can share and grow. A place and framework for people to be proud of, and feel safe within.
Get Involved
We need maintainers, designers, writers, community managers, and more. If you want to join the fun, here are some places to check out:
Governance
We're in the early days, so we don't have official structures yet, but we will be setting up a committee soon. Join us on Matrix to help define it. One thing's for sure, there will be no BDFL, and nobody will be irreplaceable.
FAQ
Why are you doing this?
DHH, the creator and figurehead of Rails, has expressed support for far-right political figures, and amongst other things has called for "remigration" (or ethnic cleansing) in Europe. We aren't willing to accept that someone with these views is in charge of the framework we rely upon. The current Rails Core team don't seem to be willing to stand up to him, so we're doing something ourselves.
Who is this for? Why not use Hanami (etc)?
There are a great many Rails applications out there which would be difficult to move to another framework, not to mention costly and time-consuming. There are also many popular gems such as Devise which fundamentally depend on the Rails way of doing things. We recommend other frameworks like Hanami for new projects, but for projects with large sunk costs, we hope to provide a way to continue without the political baggage that Rails has now gained.
Technical
What are you going to do?
Over time, we will fork the major components of Rails, rename them, and build a maintenance community for them. We'll be starting with `railties`, then move on to the various other gem components one at a time. We will release detailed instructions on how to migrate your applications to Mosscap.
Will you diverge from Rails?
We do not intend to, but Rails will probably diverge from us. The core parts of Rails have been stable since Rails 6, and that's what we intend to maintain. It should be boring and predictable. We will likely be forking from Rails 8.x, and you should probably never expect Mosscap 9.0. We'll be optimising for stability and maintainability for existing Rails applications.
When can I start using this?
We're don't have a specific timeline now, but hope to get everything up and running soon. If you just want to stay up to date on our progress it's best to follow us at @mosscap@ruby.social.
